How much HP will Vortec heads add?
The original answer was related to modifying the heads to accept more valve lift.
Our original answer combined the Chevrolet Hot cam with a set of these Vortec heads.
Our estimate then and now is around 350-375 horsepower.
Your question relates to porting the Vortec heads to improve the flow, which is a great idea..
Do aluminum heads crack?
Aluminum heads will warp long before they crack from heat. Cast iron heads are much more prone to cracking. That said, aluminum heads in OE applications tend to be VERY sensitive to warping. In fact, many production car engines will pop head gaskets and need the heads milled anytime they overheat.
Can you put aluminum heads on a cast iron block?
If you are installing aluminum heads on a cast-iron block, the difference in expansion rates can cause sealing problems. Because of this, composite gaskets seem to work best. There are different designs available. Just make sure whatever you use is applicable in an aluminum-head/iron-block situation.
How much horsepower do headers add to a 350?
The length of the primary tubing determines the effective rpm range, but headers can be worth 15-20 hp on the right application. Run on our restrictive two-barrel 350, the headers improved the power output to 248 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque, with consistent gains through the rev range.
Are aluminum heads worth the money?
Yes they are worth it. Pretty much every aftermarket head is worth a good power increase over any stock head. I like the aluminum heads since they are easier to port, repairable, and give a nice weight reduction. They usually are only a few hundred more than the iron heads.
Can you paint an aluminum engine block?
You need to verify the paint is intended for aluminum and that the block is extremely clean. I usually use some self-etching primer to paint over aluminum, but with painting engine blocks(usually iron) I just used engine paint primer. Without primer there isn’t much for the paint to stick to.
Can I put Vortec heads on a 350?
night rider Veteran Member. Yes the 1996-02 L31 350 vortec heads will bolt to ANY gen 1 350 engine.
How much compression does an aluminum head have?
As mentioned previously, with a cast iron-headed motor on the street, somewhere in the range of 9.5:1 is the practical limit for compression; with aluminum, 10.5:1 or so is a pretty good maximum figure.
Can you put 400 heads on a 350?
400 heads on a 350 block is a great way to increase your midrange and top end power. The swap is a direct bolt – on deal, you just need to be sure to use 400 head gaskets when you do the swap.
Are Vortec heads worth it?
vortec heads are one of the cheapest hp gain and they’ll give you better gas mileage. For the center bolt valve covers the ones for the vortec heads are taller then the center bolt valve covers you find on non-vortec heads.
How do you prep aluminum heads for painting?
Place the valve covers on the cylinder heads and tape the base of the valve covers to prevent over-spray getting on the covers. Tape the intake port side of the head. Paint the cylinder head with one coat of primer. Allow the primer to dry for 30 minutes.
Should I paint my engine block?
Most people consider painting an engine block when rebuilding the motor. Not only does it create a more attractive appearance, but it also protects the engine from rust and corrosion. You can match the color of your engine to the paint of your vehicle which also needs protected for a customized look as well.
Does aluminum heads increase HP?
Iron heads vs Aluminum heads make no difference in power or heat.
Should you paint aluminum heads?
Yes. No, the heads do not dissipate large amounts of heat. Cast iron is poor at heat transfer, aluminum is way better, as such, you are way ahead of the game with aluminum heads anyway. Get it clean and slightly “scuffed”.
How much horsepower will Edelbrock heads add?
After installing the Edelbrock Performer heads, the 302 blasted out 383 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque, for a gain of 78 hp peak to peak. Near 6,000 rpm, the difference in power was an astonishing 92 hp. The name Edelbrock conjures up all manner of performance components, and for good reason.
